Comprehensive Terms of Membership & Community Policies
1. Introduction and Core Values
Nepal Code is a non-profit, community-driven organization dedicated to bridging the gap between
academic learning and industry requirements within the Nepalese technology sector. By joining this
organization, you become part of a collective effort to build impactful software, share knowledge,
and elevate the local engineering culture.
Our core values are:
- Meritocracy: Influence is earned through
contribution and skill.
- Openness: We default to open-source and
transparent communication.
- Accessibility: We strive to make
high-quality tech education available to all Nepalese students, regardless of their location or
economic status.
2. Membership Eligibility and Enrollment
To be a member of Nepal Code, individuals must meet the following criteria:
- Identity: Members must use their real
identities or verifiable professional aliases on collaboration platforms (GitHub, Slack,
Discord).
- Commitment: Members are expected to
contribute at least 3–5 hours per month to community discussions, project reviews, or event
organization to maintain an "Active" status.
- Onboarding: New members must complete the
official onboarding process, which includes a review of the current project roadmap and
technical stack guidelines.
3. Professional Code of Conduct
Nepal Code thrives on diversity. We follow a strict "Community-First" approach to behavior.
- Inclusive Environment: Members shall not
engage in discrimination based on caste, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or
political affiliation.
- Constructive Feedback: When reviewing code
or project proposals, members must provide feedback that is technical and helpful, avoiding
personal attacks.
- Harassment Policy: We have a
zero-tolerance policy for harassment. This includes unwelcome sexual attention, stalking, or the
publication of private information (doxing).
- Dispute Resolution: In the event of a
conflict between members, the Board of Mentors will act as mediators to reach a fair resolution.
4. Intellectual Property (IP) and Licensing
Since Nepal Code is heavily involved in software development, the following IP rules apply:
A. Open Source Contributions
Unless otherwise stated, all code contributed to official Nepal Code GitHub repositories is licensed
under the MIT License. By submitting a Pull Request (PR), you agree that your contribution can be
used, modified, and distributed by the organization and the public.
B. Project Ownership
While contributors retain the "Moral Rights" to be credited for their work, the "Nepal Code" brand
and the final compiled products (Apps, Websites, APIs) are managed by the organizational leadership
to ensure longevity and maintenance.
C. External Projects
If a member brings an external project into the organization for collaboration, a specific
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) must be signed regarding future monetization and ownership.
5. Learning, Mentorship, and Data Responsibility
The Mentorship Pact
Mentors are volunteers who dedicate time to guide juniors. Mentees must respect this time by:
- Coming prepared to meetings with specific questions.
- Attempting to solve problems independently (Google/Documentation) before asking for help.
- Completing assigned tasks within the agreed deadlines.
Data Privacy
We value your privacy. Nepal Code collects personal data (e.g., GitHub handles, LinkedIn profiles,
and email addresses) solely for:
- Project assignment and team coordination.
- Sending newsletters and event invitations.
- Verifying identity for certificates of completion.
We will never share your contact information with third-party recruiters without your explicit,
written consent.
6. Financial Policies and Non-Profit Status
Nepal Code is currently a non-profit entity.
- Membership Fees: Currently, basic
membership is free. Any future "Pro" tiers or workshop fees will be used strictly for server
costs, event hosting, and community swag.
- Sponsorships: All corporate sponsorships
are handled transparently, and funds are audited by the finance lead to ensure they are used for
community growth.
7. Termination and Exit
Voluntary Resignation
A member may leave at any time. Upon leaving, the member should ensure that all pending tasks are
handed over to a peer to prevent project stagnation.
Involuntary Removal
The leadership team reserves the right to terminate membership for:
- Consistent inactivity (more than 6 months without communication).
- Intentional sabotage of organization infrastructure or codebases.
- Severe or repeated violations of the Code of Conduct.
8. Amendments
These terms may be updated as the organization evolves. Members will be notified of significant
changes via the official Slack/Discord announcement channels at least 14 days before the new terms
take effect.
