Comprehensive Terms of Membership & Community Policies

1. Introduction and Core Values

Nepal Code is a non-profit, community-driven organization dedicated to bridging the gap between academic learning and industry requirements within the Nepalese technology sector. By joining this organization, you become part of a collective effort to build impactful software, share knowledge, and elevate the local engineering culture.

Our core values are:

  • Meritocracy: Influence is earned through contribution and skill.
  • Openness: We default to open-source and transparent communication.
  • Accessibility: We strive to make high-quality tech education available to all Nepalese students, regardless of their location or economic status.

2. Membership Eligibility and Enrollment

To be a member of Nepal Code, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Identity: Members must use their real identities or verifiable professional aliases on collaboration platforms (GitHub, Slack, Discord).
  • Commitment: Members are expected to contribute at least 3–5 hours per month to community discussions, project reviews, or event organization to maintain an "Active" status.
  • Onboarding: New members must complete the official onboarding process, which includes a review of the current project roadmap and technical stack guidelines.

3. Professional Code of Conduct

Nepal Code thrives on diversity. We follow a strict "Community-First" approach to behavior.

  • Inclusive Environment: Members shall not engage in discrimination based on caste, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or political affiliation.
  • Constructive Feedback: When reviewing code or project proposals, members must provide feedback that is technical and helpful, avoiding personal attacks.
  • Harassment Policy: We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. This includes unwelcome sexual attention, stalking, or the publication of private information (doxing).
  • Dispute Resolution: In the event of a conflict between members, the Board of Mentors will act as mediators to reach a fair resolution.

4. Intellectual Property (IP) and Licensing

Since Nepal Code is heavily involved in software development, the following IP rules apply:

A. Open Source Contributions

Unless otherwise stated, all code contributed to official Nepal Code GitHub repositories is licensed under the MIT License. By submitting a Pull Request (PR), you agree that your contribution can be used, modified, and distributed by the organization and the public.

B. Project Ownership

While contributors retain the "Moral Rights" to be credited for their work, the "Nepal Code" brand and the final compiled products (Apps, Websites, APIs) are managed by the organizational leadership to ensure longevity and maintenance.

C. External Projects

If a member brings an external project into the organization for collaboration, a specific Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) must be signed regarding future monetization and ownership.

5. Learning, Mentorship, and Data Responsibility

The Mentorship Pact

Mentors are volunteers who dedicate time to guide juniors. Mentees must respect this time by:

  • Coming prepared to meetings with specific questions.
  • Attempting to solve problems independently (Google/Documentation) before asking for help.
  • Completing assigned tasks within the agreed deadlines.

Data Privacy

We value your privacy. Nepal Code collects personal data (e.g., GitHub handles, LinkedIn profiles, and email addresses) solely for:

  • Project assignment and team coordination.
  • Sending newsletters and event invitations.
  • Verifying identity for certificates of completion.

We will never share your contact information with third-party recruiters without your explicit, written consent.

6. Financial Policies and Non-Profit Status

Nepal Code is currently a non-profit entity.

  • Membership Fees: Currently, basic membership is free. Any future "Pro" tiers or workshop fees will be used strictly for server costs, event hosting, and community swag.
  • Sponsorships: All corporate sponsorships are handled transparently, and funds are audited by the finance lead to ensure they are used for community growth.

7. Termination and Exit

Voluntary Resignation

A member may leave at any time. Upon leaving, the member should ensure that all pending tasks are handed over to a peer to prevent project stagnation.

Involuntary Removal

The leadership team reserves the right to terminate membership for:

  • Consistent inactivity (more than 6 months without communication).
  • Intentional sabotage of organization infrastructure or codebases.
  • Severe or repeated violations of the Code of Conduct.

8. Amendments

These terms may be updated as the organization evolves. Members will be notified of significant changes via the official Slack/Discord announcement channels at least 14 days before the new terms take effect.
